Election Day 2022: Experts explain what needs to happen in order to keep Texas governor race close!

Fort Bend County, Texas (KTRK) – With summer winding down, schools back in session, and voting just weeks away, we can expect to see the governors’ race in Texas rebound.

This was on full display this week in Fort Bend County. A place where Governor Greg Abbott won by less than 500 votes four years ago.

Experts say the boycott is purple and could indicate a path to victory for any of the candidates. People crowded into the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds Thursday to hear Governor Beto O’Rourke’s candidate.

He was not the only candidate to visit the area. Abbott, O’Rourke’s opponent, was in Richmond.

On Saturday, Abbott met door-to-door neighbors. It’s a move that did not surprise Rice University political science professor Mark Jones.

“He put Beto O’Rourke and his fear of God in Abbott because he could lose this if he doesn’t do everything right,” Jones explained.

Polls conducted in early 2022 showed that Abbott, by two digits, is now in the single digits. “The good thing about Beto is that he was able to keep him close, but the bad thing about Beto is that he hasn’t been able to narrow Abbott’s advantage over the past six months,” Jones said.

O’Rourke focuses on gun and abortion laws. The Trigger Act recently went into effect, banning most abortions statewide.

On the day this happened, O’Rourke held a press conference. “Banning abortion without exception in cases of rape or incest is not of ours,” O’Rourke said. “This may be Greg Abbott, but he’s not the Texan.” Abbott focuses on connecting O’Rourke with National Democratic leaders, including President Joe Biden. His primary focus is on jobs, immigration, and inflation.

“Lower property taxes. More jobs. Safe borders. Safe communities,” Abbott said. “These are policies that everyone in Texas supports.”

Experts believe the race may be halted if Republicans switch sides and the number of young people who vote. If that happens, O’Rourke could come close.

“He keeps it as a competitive race,” Jones explained. “That’s within one touch, side kick, and field goal.”

The tight race will attract more stopping and spending as the vote is just weeks away.
